Greek printing had generally meant the printing of passages of Greek within Latin text, but in January 1476 the first wholly Greek printed volume, the Greek grammar Erotemata, appeared in Milan. Lascaris was a Greek scholar, who had been librarian to Lorenzo de Medici, and was at one time a member of the New Academy of the printer/publisher Aldus Manutius in Venice, a society which existed to promote the study and preservation of Greek language and literature. This is a copy of the first printed edition in Greek (the editio princeps, as it is known), printed in Florence in 1494 by Lorenzo de Alopa, in an edition by Janus Lascaris (1445-1535). The Planudean Anthology was the first to be printed, since it was the only known anthology at the time. Editions in the modern period derive from two manuscript sources, the Palatine Anthology from the 10 th century, and the Anthology of Planudes from the 14 th century. The Anthologia Graeca, or Greek Anthology is, as its name suggests, a collection of Greek poems, mainly epigrams from the classical and byzantine period.
